Voces intimae
means ‘inner voices’ and is the name of Jean Sibelius' string quartet in D minor, Op. 56. He wrote it in 1906 and it was first performed four years later. Sibelius had considerable health and financial problems during this period. For many, this work is seen as evidence of Sibelius' inner turmoil. Today, it is one of the composer's most popular chamber music pieces.
